Description
POSITION An Archaeological Assistant (Research Associate II Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. ORGANIZATION CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. LOCATION Fort Polk is a nearly 200,000 acre United States Army installation in the Vernon Parish County located approximately 7 miles east of Leesville, Louisiana, and 20 miles north of DeRidder, Louisiana. In the Vernon Parish County, you can find and abundance of recreational opportunities including golf courses, parks, museums, lakes, and excellent educational opportunities. RESPONSIBILITIES Curatorial Assistance: Lab Component (Assist with curation of artifacts and collections): a) Accessioning and re-cataloguing collections; b) Scanning and archiving archaeological project documents; c) Assisting with the management of the heritage family collection; d) Photographing artifacts; e) Entry of artifact information into existing database. Archaeological Fieldwork: Fieldwork Component (Assist with site monitoring, testing, excavation, protection): a) Assisting field archaeologist in marking site boundaries; b) Monitoring protected sites; c) Assisting on pedestrian surveys of historic sites; d) Other fieldwork initiatives as necessary. Program Support: Other Duties as Assigned (Heritage Day activities, public outreach, grounds maintenance): a) Participate in public outreach and education; b) Conducting historical research as needed; c) Contribute to the implementation of the ICRMP; d) Assisting with grounds and equipment upkeep.
Qualifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The successful candidate must be able to walk over uneven terrain in inclement weather. The position may also require bending, climbing, and lifting up to 25 pounds. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BA or BS in Anthropology or Archaeology with three years of experience with curation tasks. Ability and experience implementing techniques for accessioning collections, cataloging artifacts, and labeling and processing collections. Ability to conduct field work in rugged terrain and weather extremes as needed. The successful candidate should have good fieldwork knowledge, as well as, capability to assist with any excavation, completing ARPA damage assessments, using a GPS, using a map/compass, and monitoring archaeological sites. Ability to obtain appropriate training and certifications required to achieve all duties herein. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of the archaeology of Louisiana or the southeast is strongly preferred.
