The Benioff Ocean Initiative (www.boi.ucsb.edu) at the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks a specialist to generate actionable environmental change in the oceans.
The Benioff Ocean Initiative is a new endeavor led by UCSB that aims to use marine research and marine scientists help solve pervasive ocean problems— it’s an experimental model in innovating ways to translate university-powered research into tangible solutions to problems that affect ocean ecosystems and human communities.
Applicant will be required to communicate and collaborate with other research scientists who will be recruited to study ocean issues within these working groups. The purpose of the research working groups will be to generate new science and review existing science to execute new solutions for ocean problems. Advanced expertise in marine science will be required to assemble, lead and synthesize results from such groups.
Incumbent will also provide considerable input in carrying out responsibilities that will include organizing scientific working groups to study ocean issues, coordinating ocean-related public outreach activities and working with marine contractors/service providers to carry forward projects generated by research groups.
Masters degree in marine science, biological science, environmental studies, or similar.
Experience or working familiarity in the areas of marine policy or data analytics or geographic information systems (GIS) or ocean geospatial data, with some advanced expertise in at least one of these fields.
Prefer PhD (or advanced level Masters experience) including experience in science outreach and communication, demonstrated achievement in peer-review publishing, and experience conducting marine science inside and outside of university settings.
Salary and benefits will depend on academic background and experience. 100% time appointment for one year from start date with possibility for multiple year renewal.
