ERM is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill several project-term Wildlife Technician positions. This position is an exciting opportunity to join the bat survey team at ERM. Minimum qualifications include field experience conducting presence/probable absence surveys for bats, including experience conducting hibernacula, acoustic and/or mist net surveys, as well as data recording, and equipment maintenance. Preferred applicants will possess prior experience conducting or assisting with bat surveys in the mid-Atlantic region, including the tasks described below.
•Assist qualified Bat Biologists with conducting a variety of field studies on threatened/endangered bat species.
•Perform habitat surveys and assessments, and collect and analyze acoustic data.
•Conduct mist net surveys, radio-tracking of bats, and roost emergence counts.
•Perform mine portal/cave surveys, hibernaculum population censuses, and track survey progress.
•Conduct, maintain, and decontaminate equipment, store and organize field data, and prepare reports.
•Wildlife technicians are generally expected to be available and willing to be on site, in the field for the full season (anticipated March 2017 through August 2017), and work long hours each day, including late night/early morning hours to conduct the requisite night survey work.
•This position requires working in extreme field conditions such as rugged terrain and inclement weather.
•Undergraduate in a wildlife related field (B.S. preferred).
•Minimum 1 season of biological field survey experience.
•Valid driver’s license.
•Demonstrated experience with radio-telemetry equipment.
•Willingness to work long hours in the field, in challenging field conditions, travel to remote locations, and work independently.
•Positive and effective communication with team members and project or task managers.
•Effective organizational and oral communication skills.
•Detail-oriented, well organized, professional, and self-motivated.
•Problem solving and decision making skills.
•Preferred Skills and Experience:
•Experience conducting bat surveys, including assessing potential habitat, setting up acoustic detectors, setting up and monitoring mist nets.
•Prior consulting experience.
•Inoculated for pre-exposure rabies, with recent titer check (within 2 years).
•Familiar with Indiana bat, gray bat, Virginia big-eared bat, and northern long-eared bat ecology and habitat.
