Looking for an adventure in the Mojave Desert this Spring? Multiple (2-4) positions available. WEST is seeking candidates to join our team of Mojave area Avian Biologists for Spring Migration season. Primary duties are to conduct Fatality Monitoring and post-collection analysis at solar energy installations in San Bernardino County, California and Clark County, Nevada.
Strong preference for candidates with experience conducting field surveys in the Mojave Desert, especially those that have been previously approved by the Bureau of Land Management or California Energy Commission for work in this region.
Fieldwork will require long days in hot conditions (often over 100F). Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of the environment (sharp vegetation, rattlesnakes, hiking in rugged terrain, dust, extreme heat and sun). Proficient use of maps, compass, GPS, and other standard field equipment is required. Early morning/sunrise starts are expected. Work is full time and is expected to require 8-10 hours per day and average 40 hours per week – overtime (paid accordingly) could be necessary depending on monitoring results. Position duration is minimum 4 weeks beginning approximately May 2 to June 1. There is a possibility for further (regional) work beyond this term.
Comfortable, safe, and spacious housing (shared unit with private quarters) in Las Vegas/Henderson area is provided, and mileage reimbursement will be paid for personal vehicle use. Strong preference for candidates willing to use personal vehicle for work (high clearance recommended - 4x4 not required). Candidate must check with personal insurance carrier to ensure that coverage applies while on work site. Site-specific safety equipment is required (e.g. hardhat, snake gaiters, gloves, safety sunglasses) and will be provided. Employee is only responsible for their own steel(or composite)-toed boots and binoculars. All other gear provided.
B.S. degree in biology or directly related scientific field, highly proficient in identification of Mojave Desert bird species by sight and sound, ability to work independently and interact positively with field supervisor and technicians, and overall dedication to excellence and sense of pride in their work. Work generally involves working in pairs, and candidate must be able to cooperate and coexist positively with coworkers. Work involves frequent interaction with client and on-site biologists and the employee must be able to conduct themselves in an extremely professional manner at all times.
Housing is comfortable but shared, and employee must be able to live/exist amicably with coworkers. Employee will be required to participate in periodic cleaning duties of the shared housing.
Experience working in the Mojave Desert and/or ability in identifying birds of this region is strongly preferred.
Employee must be able to: appear for work on time (surveys often begin as early as 5:30am); Maintain focus for long periods of time; Follow instructions from manager and team leader; Maintain positive attitude; Accept guidance and constructive criticism. Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys will require walking/hiking up to 8 miles each day over uneven terrain, and surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Surveyors may encounter snakes and insects and other wildlife.
