Biological Field Technician
Location: Eastern Kansas

WEST has an opening for a biological field technician in eastern Kansas beginning in mid-March and continuing for several months or longer. Primary responsibility of this position is to conduct avian use surveys and maintain acoustic bat monitoring equipment at multiple sites but may also include other similar tasks. Strong preference for candidates with experience conducting field surveys and strong birding skills. An average work week may include 30-40 hours but could be longer or shorter depending on the project and seasonal workloads. Housing will not be provided. Compensation is DOE.
Successful candidates will: 1) be able to identify birds of Kansas by sight and sound, 2) be able to work long days in sometimes extreme weather in a remote field setting, 3) work well both independently and with others while maintaining a positive attitude, 4) be in good physical shape so they can occasionally walk on rugged terrain over uneven ground for multiple hours, 5) follow field and data entry protocols, and 6) have good communication skills. Accurate and thorough data collection is essential. Job duties require use of compass, Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, microphone devices, and digital cameras.
Preferred qualifications include strong bird-identification skills, a bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or equivalent, and a minimum of one year of field experience.
Work will be independent but applicant must be able to positively interact with project managers, clients, landowners.
Proficient use of maps, compass, GPS, and other standard field equipment is required. Valid driver’s license required. Drug test, MVR check, and online driving instruction must be completed and meet minimum standards before selected candidates can start work per WEST health and safety policy. Vehicle will be provided or mileage reimbursed. GPS units and other field equipment will be provided by WEST; however, field technicians must provide their own binoculars, cell phone, and suitable footwear.

Successful candidates must be able to pass a background check; a pre-employment drug screen; and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.
