Biological Field Technician
Location: Adams County, Washington

WEST, Inc. has one opening for a biological field technician beginning in March 2017 and continuing through February 2018. Primary duties include conducting pre-construction avian point count surveys at a proposed wind energy facility near Othello, Washington. Point count surveys will be conducted throughout the day with a focus on passerines, raptors (e.g., hawks and eagles) and other large birds (e.g., sandhill cranes and waterfowl). In addition to species identification, the surveyor will record detailed records of each observation including behavior, distance, flight heights and flight paths.
Depending upon project timing and skills of the applicant, position may include additional opportunities that include small mammal surveys, vegetation mapping and bat-related work. Avian point count surveys would take precedent to these secondary tasks.
Mileage reimbursement will be provided if personal vehicle is used, otherwise vehicle will be provided. No housing is provided. Applicants that live within 1.5 hours of Othello will be given preference
Applicants should have sufficient and demonstrable experience conducting bird point count surveys and working in shrub/scrub habitat. Applicants should be able to identify birds species that may occur in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion. A B.S. degree in wildlife management (or similar study) and formal Ornithology class is preferred, but not a prerequisite. Applicants with prior experience conducting avian point count surveys will be given preference. Applicants must be able to adapt to various weather conditions including high winds and extreme temperatures.
Work will be independent but applicant must be able to positively interact with project managers, clients, landowners.
The work can be tedious but this could be a good opportunity for someone looking to get their foot in the door with an environmental consulting firm that has an excellent reputation. Must have excellent observation skills and work ethic. Occasional use of personal vehicle may be necessary.
Survey schedule is flexible but surveyor will be required to conduct surveys twice a month, spaced approximately 10 days apart which will result in approximately 25-30 hours per month. The position is funded though through February 2018 and a minimum commitment of 6 months expected. Depending on surveyor flexibility and aptitude, surveyor may be incorporated into other wildlife surveys throughout the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion.
