Synopsis
The Community Education Coordinator VISTA serves primarily to build and enhance new community education programs in Carson City parks and open spaces placing special emphasis on underserved groups.

The mission of Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is to provide exceptional parks, open space, and diverse recreational opportunities to enhance the quality of life in Carson City, while preserving our natural resources for future generations.

Position Description:
The Community Education Coordinator VISTA will be an essential member of the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space team. In cooperation with our community partners, this person will serve to create new and innovative park-based education programs that improve stewardship and appreciation of our public lands. This will include developing interpretive programs designed to get more citizens outside where they will benefit from spending time in parks and open spaces.

Service Location: Carson City, NV

Timeline for Service: June 5, 2017 - June 4, 2018

Primary Responsibilities:
Develop and ground test new community education programming including interpretive walks, special events, and other activities designed to increase and improve Carson City citizens’ experience in parks and open spaces;
Develop and maintain partnerships with schools and community groups;
Train volunteers to help implement community programming;
Develop teacher training workshops based on Student Stewards Program.

Qualifications:
Passionate commitment to Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space mission and vision;
Bachelor’s degree in education, science, natural resources, forestry, or a related field;
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
Exceptional writing skills;
Strong communication skills;
Strong organizational skills;
High degree of initiative and spirit of service;
Experience working with community groups;
Preferred: experience teaching in formal or informal settings;
Preferred: reading, writing, and speaking competency in Spanish language.

AmeriCorps VISTA:
Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Community Education Coordinator VISTA position is funded by the Corporations for National and Community Service and will serve within the AmeriCorps VISTA program. AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty and increase organizational capacity. Each VISTA member makes a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. Compensation:
In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance of $990/month, health benefits during their service, and have the option of receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,730.00 or post-service stipend of $1,500.00 after completing their service. A relocation travel allowance of no less than $550 may also apply if moving.

Housing:
Carson City will provide a housing option at a Carson City park. A separate housing agreement may be required if the selected candidate chooses this option.
