Description
With three years of funding from the Center for Excellence in Hazardous Materials Management (CEHMM), Audubon New Mexico will be creating new curricula for delivery to high school students in eastern New Mexico. Focusing on grassland conservation practices that enhance habitat quality for species of concern such as lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicictus) and dunes sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus), these programs will provide opportunities for high schoolers to participate in inquiry and project-based learning.

The Education and Outreach Manager will be responsible for working with the Director of Community Education to develop, implement, and manage a new high school working lands conservation education program in eastern New Mexico. Specifically, s/he will be responsible for working with teachers, stakeholders, and an Audubon Educator to develop a curriculum that combines in-class lectures by local experts with project-based learning activities in working landscapes. This will include working with teacher focus groups to identify learning outcomes, outreach to the ranching/conservation community, and participation in field trips. Additionally, the Education Manager will assist with planning and coordination of community outreach events, including annual conservation grazing workshops as well as coordinating with agency partners, landowners, researchers, and educators. In year 2 of this position, the Education and Outreach Manager will begin supervising an Audubon Educator who will help deliver content to students.

Essential Functions:
-Assist in the development of an education program that aligns with local and national learning standards as well as the Audubon mission and local conservation ranching outcomes. Develop conceptual frameworks, support materials, assessment tools, and other elements as needed.
-Assist with grant administration, including tracking hours/activities, analyzing data, and maintaining a strong relationship with the funder.
-Hire, train, and supervise education project staff, interns and volunteers, as necessary.
-Outreach to schools and teachers for content development and program coordination.
-Compile and track program statistics, audience demographics, and program evaluations.
-Assist with grant administration, including tracking hours/activities, analyzing data, and maintaining a strong relationship with the funder.
-Maintain and develop partnerships with public and private schools, youth organizations, and other relevant community institutions to cultivate youth conservation leaders and junior volunteers.
-Develop partnerships with state and federal agencies, private landowners, colleges, universities, research institutions, and other conservation organizations.
-In collaboration with State staff, develop effective promotional materials and marketing strategies to communicate the work that is being done on this project and conservation issues in the region.
-Interact and work with the general public, Audubon members, teachers and school officials, Board Members, other conservation groups and government officials.
-Serve as an ambassador for Audubon New Mexico and NAS throughout the community, specifically, at education conferences, meetings, advisory boards, teacher conferences, festivals and other public events.
-In collaboration with Audubon NM staff, assist with coordination of annual Conservation Grazing workshops.
-Develop and deliver staff and volunteer educator training sessions. -Responsible for recruitment of and support marketing; communication with and stewardship of staff, interns and volunteers.
-Write articles for the E-newsletter, newsletter, and other print media.
Qualifications
-Bachelor’s Degree in the natural sciences or education or related field.
3-5 years of demonstrated experience in a conservation education setting including teaching, management experience and curriculum development, or a similar combination of education and experience, required.
-Demonstrated knowledge of educational program design and assessment, knowledge of wildlife conservation issues, and ability to articulate them and inspire participation. Experience with measurement and evaluation best practices strongly preferred.
-Attention to detail, excellent time-management and organizational skills, sound judgment under pressure.
-Demonstrated ability to solve problems creatively.
-Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
-Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
-Strong knowledge of the natural history of New Mexico, especially the grasslands of eastern NM, and the ability to pass on that knowledge to members of the public through guided interpretive walks with groups and one-on-one encounters.
-Capacity to work easily and effectively with a wide range of people, build relationships, be diplomatic and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the dynamics of a complex organization.
-Interest, understanding and commitment to the Audubon New Mexico’s mission and vision.
-Knowledge and commitment to conservation of birds and other wildlife and their habitats.
-General knowledge of scientific concepts and environmental issues.
-Ability to work long, flexible hours when needed, including weekends and evenings.
-Must be willing to travel as the job requires.
-Ability to work outdoors, in all weather conditions and on varying terrain, with or without accommodation; must be able to carry field equipment at times, with or without accommodation.
-Must possess valid New Mexico driver's license.
