With support from Waste Reduction Program Staff, the Environmental Sustainability Intern, with a focus on Compost and Waste Reduction, will support various sustainability initiatives around the Presidio. Major duties include hands-on support to the Presidio Compost Program, and advancing the study of carbon inventory and sequestration in the Presidio. This intern will also provide support to the Salvage/Excess Property Disposal programs. In addition, this intern will lead volunteers and education groups in related work.

Start Date: As early as April 2017
Length of Position: 10-12 month commitment
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday; occasional weekend days, holidays and evenings

• Provide support to the Presidio Compost Program: build and water compost piles and assist with quality control
• Support the Waste Reduction Program by performing audits, moving or organizing materials, rectify waste management issues
• Learn about Presidio Trust Salvage/historic materials collection: help maintain collection and promote re-use throughout the Presidio Trust
• Learn about compost production and compost application
• Develop and lead initiatives and/or research related to Carbon inventory, carbon sequestration of Presidio landscapes and compost program
• Collect, organize, and effectively communicate information pertaining to the Presidio Trust’s Waste Reduction and Compost Programs
• Engage in Waste Reduction and Sustainability outreach to Presidio Trust shops, offices, and residences
• Lead volunteer programs, and develop appropriate projects for volunteer engagement
• Additional Duties as assigned

Stipend: $300 every two weeks
Transportation Benefit: $50 monthly parking permits for car owners or $50/month for non-car owners
Housing: Interns are provided single occupancy dorm-style housing in the Presidio and abide by a set of residential rules. You must live in the housing provided to receive the stipend; we cannot accept non-residential interns.

• Positive attitude and ability to work with a professional demeanor and as part of a team
• Keen interest in Sustainability, both environmental and economic
• Knowledge of, or experience working in waste management, recycling, composting, waste reduction, sustainability, and/or other related programs
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong research and analytical skills
• Comfortable working both outdoors and indoors
• Ability to perform manual work
• Enthusiasm for engaging and leading the community, including volunteer and community groups
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
• Bachelors of Science degree OR equivalent work experience in a related field
• Must be a US Citizen and at least 21 years old
• Must possess and maintain a valid State driver’s license
