Merlin Biological is considering applicants for natural resource-related positions. Anticipated work for the coming field season will require forestry skills, with high potential for mollusk and amphibian identification skills. The primary work area is within the Cascades Resource Area of the Salem District BLM (the west slope of the Cascades Range near Salem Oregon). Project areas are remote and will require camping for up to a week at a time. Some areas will be accessed by canoe, though most are near forest roads. The position requires long hours of hiking in steep and often brushy terrain with abundant down wood and in temperatures of up to 90 degrees during late July and August. We will be conducting stand exams which require identifying tree species, coring trees to assess age and growth, measuring height, quantifying down wood and identifying shrub and herb layer vegetation. We will be working independently or in teams of two. We will be camping in small dispersed camp sites, with no amenities. The work schedule is flexible but we intend to work 3-4 long days each week. Each crew member will provide their own camp gear including tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, field clothes, hiking boots and any other personal comforts. Start date is flexible, mid May through early June. Work will commence in mid May and will continue through mid August with possible extension into November.
Identification of western Oregon tree species is required.
High level of physical fitness.
Strong motivation for working in physically challenging conditions.
Ability to work and camp with respect for others for extended length of time.
Ability to navigate through forested land with a compass, gps unit and map.
Please submit a resume and brief cover letter describing your interests and experience. Hiring may be ongoing, but initial application assessment will begin May 1st.
