This position applies professional scientific knowledge and techniques in planning, conducting and evaluating Department programs to manage and enhance Indiana’s natural resources. Work includes all responsibilities to manage a State property and to produce fish for statewide stocking programs. Details include but are not limited to: fish production, preparing and administering property purchasing and budgets, administering property inventory system, and participating in information and education activities on the property and throughout the State (tours, presentations, etc.). Other duties include supervision, training, evaluation and discipline of subordinate property personnel, and administering the DNR’s safety program. Position reports to the Statewide Hatchery Supervisor.
Plan, supervise, and participate in the development, maintenance, and management of a fish hatchery.
Manage Department of Natural Resources public property in accordance with laws, rules and policies as established by the State of Indiana and Department of Natural Resources.
Supervise and participate in fish culture activities to conform to established guidelines and investigate new fish culture procedures to advance the science of animal husbandry. Includes production plans, reports and biosecurity/HAACP procedures.
Plan, develop and administer property management, safety, training, information and education, maintenance, construction and repair projects.
Meet reporting guidelines for State and Federal programs.
Compile and interpret biological data and modiify fish culture practices to reflect data.
Prepare written reports on fish culture activities for statewide hatcheries supervisor.
Provide fisheries, pond management, and general natural resource management information to the public as requested.
Author and provide input into DFW work plans, administer work unit budget, participate in Division comprehensive planning system activities, meetings, committees and training sessions as required.
Operate as hatchery financial officer to authorize and track expenditures, initiate equipment purchasing procedures and oversee property petty cash account.
Recommend regulatory changes and proposes statutory changes to improve the protection and management of fisheries resources.
