Head bird bander for the fall migratory season at our study site near Moab, UT. The Sekercioglu Lab at the University of Utah operates a full-time MAPS banding station at the Rio Mesa Center ~1 hour from Moab, UT. As lead bander you will oversee daily operations of the banding station, train and manage two volunteers, ensure accurate data collection and record keeping, and engage with various visiting groups including university classes, outside researchers, and interested locals.
The station consists of 16 mist nets that are opened 30 minutes before sunrise and remain open for 6 hours. The banding team will check these nets at 30-minute intervals and process all birds captured. The team is expected to work 10 days on, 2 days off. Banding will start in mid-August and end in late October/early November however the exact dates are flexible
Previous position as lead bander is preferred though not required. Applicants should have extensive experience in bird banding and living in remote areas. Applicants must be able to work for ~7 hours/day in hot, dry conditions. Public engagement experience is strongly suggested.
