The Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge is seeking enthusiastic individuals to spend their summer on an island in beautiful coastal Connecticut while gaining valuable, well-rounded experience working in the natural resource field. Duties include but are not limited to: interacting with the public by conducting natural and cultural history tours, leading educational programs for youth and camp groups, assisting with island maintenance projects, invasive plant management, wildlife and vegetation surveys, patrol and boat operations.

Internships will begin on May 22nd and continue until mid-August (approximate end date is the 18th). Schedules will be around 40 hours per week, but will vary frequently in the length of day and start time. Interns will live in a rustic setting on islands and/or on a houseboat. Showers, food shopping, and laundry must be done on the mainland.
Applicants must have the ability to perform the physical duties of the position including being able to work in all kinds of weather, over different types of terrain, in areas with poison ivy, and with ticks and other biting insects. Applicants must be able to work with minimal supervision, be very independent and easy-going, be able to work with the public of all ages in a professional manner, have their own vehicle, and possess a valid U. S. driver’s license. Previous experience with environmental education, wildlife identification and work in a field camp setting is preferred.
