Salary
The starting rate for newly trained Observers is $4,080 per month while on deployment, which increases incrementally based on experience to a maximum of $6,720 per month. In addition to deployment pay, allowances for training time and per diems are paid during training, travel and for days spent ashore between trips.

Description
Fisheries Observers in the North Pacific work as independent biologists aboard commercial vessels fishing in the Bering Sea & Gulf of Alaska, collecting data which is used by federal and state government agencies to manage the fisheries.

Contracts are typically about 4-6 months in duration, which includes an initial 3-week training period, a deployment in the field of up to 90 days and ending with a debriefing at a government facility in Seattle or Anchorage. Vessel trip durations range from 7 to 35 days. Additional contracts are available following debriefing.

Accommodations are provided during training and throughout the contract period. Travel costs are covered between the points of training, briefing and debriefings in Seattle or Anchorage. Techsea also arranges for travel for employees to and from their assigned vessels.

DUTIES

Some duties include:

• Recording fishing effort data (location and estimate of catch)
• Sampling to determine species composition of the catches
• Collecting biological information (size frequencies & sex ratios)
• Collecting of biological samples
• Monitoring levels of compliance to fisheries regulations
• Recording incidental captures of marine mammals and seabirds
• Keeping a detailed log of sampling activities
Qualifications
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet government standards to be considered for employment in these programs which include:

• US Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Bachelor's degree from accredited college/university with a major in Biology/Natural sciences
• Minimum of 30 semester hours or equivalent in applicable biological sciences
• Experience with dichotomous keys (species identification guides)
• One undergraduate course each in math and statistics
• Computer skills
• No limitations that will interfere with performance of duties
• Criminal Background Check
