Description
This is a full-time museum technician position to assist the curator (Dr. Jennifer Frey) with all functions of the Vertebrate Wildlife Museum in the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology at New Mexico State University. The museum is primarily used for education and consists of over 6,000 specimens/lots of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The museum also maintains an active outreach education program focused on the wildlife of southern New Mexico, which contacts ca 5,000 people annually. A pool of undergraduate student volunteers and interns assist with the delivery of the museum programming. Primary duties of this position will include 1) routine care and maintenance of the collections, 2) preparation of new specimen material, and 3) development, organization, and implementation of outreach programs and museum tours.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in wildlife science, biology, or conservation ecology
• > 3.0 GPA
• Experience preparing standard skin+skeleton voucher specimens of birds or mammals (taxidermy experience might be considered in lieu of this)
• Experience working in a museum collection
• Experience with public speaking
• Must be able to work independently, be highly organized, and have acute attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience delivering educational programs or tours
• Knowledge and experience databasing museum records
• Experience preparing and maintaining standard fluid-preserved specimens of fishes or herps • Experience preparing skeletal material and caring for dermestid beetle colony
• Knowledge of museum safety issues
