Versar's Environmental Services Group is seeking a full time Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst to support its Newport News office. Under supervision, the successful candidate will performs GIS analyses on primarily natural resources data, however, the position could involve mapping and modeling for remediation, compliance, or cultural resources projects. Must be able to plan, design, develop, document, and analyze basic spatial and relational databases. Also must be able to apply basic software to manage spatial and related tabular data, build routine databases by capturing map information with a coordinate digitizer, produce maps depicting contents of databases, and writes basic software routines to facilitate analysis.

The GIS Analyst will assist and/or lead GIS related projects requiring knowledge, skills and experience in employing ESRI ArcGIS, which may include the following: converting data stored in different formats to the geodatabase format; building and editing route systems, and populating editing large data sets; using geodatabase rules to maintain data integrity; creating metadata to document datasets; ability to produce high quality maps (data collection, update and portrayal, scanning, digitizing, conversion, migration, compression image processing, plotting, editing, maintenance, metadata, distribution of geospatial data); and, experience with standard geospatial datasets such as DOQs, DEMs, DRGs, etc; and,

Experience using various associated software products such as ERDAS Imagine, Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Excel and Access, and Trimble Positions etc. a must. Experience preparing GIS deliverables for DOD clients in the current version of the Spatial Data Standards (SDSFIE) in use by NAVFAC (version 3.1 as of June 2016) preferred.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in geography, ecology, forestry, biology, and geology, or natural resources management closely related field with emphases in GIS preferred.
Minimum of three years’ experience in the application of GIS/GPS technology. Advanced degree or certification in GIS desired, but not required.
Knowledge of geography, concepts of spatial analysis, computer programming, map design, digital image processing, and coordinate geometry is required.
Ability to create basic user applications and interfaces using various programming languages (i.e., Visual Basic and Python).
Fundamental knowledge of GIS-related concepts, mapping techniques, products and geospatial industry practices, independent of software platform.
Qualifications
