Description
Work at sea collecting and recording data and biological samples for the aboard commercial fishing vessels fishing in international waters in the North Atlantic. Observers work on deck on vessels ranging from 80’ to 110’ on trips ranging from 12 to 25 days collecting data on fish catch and discard as well as detailed information on the gear and location of fishing activities. After attending a two -day training in Marion, MA observers are deployed from ports in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland, Canada. This is a challenging job and candidates must be physically able to handle heavy lifting, working odd hours and long days in rough seas.

Compensation: Compensation starts at $15.00 and is commensurate with experience. The AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Training: Two-day, paid training course starting around the 1st week of April 2017 in Marion, MA. Accommodations and meals provided. Training includes instructions on sampling protocols, gear, fisheries, fish identification, and safety.

Qualifications
Qualifications: A BS in Marine Biology or Biology with 30 credits of biology coursework, 6 credits of marine science and a math class is required. Your own transportation is required. Candidates must be a US Citizen and possess a valid driver’s license and US Passport book. Candidates must have current or recent National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) observer certification and must have received survival at sea training within the last 2 years.
