Description
TERM: This position is a one year temporary position, with limited benefits. There is a good possibility of renewal.

LOCATION: The position will be located at Lehigh, Iowa, at the Iowa DNR Prairie Resource Center at Brushy Creek State Rec. Area. Work area will be statewide.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibilities are to assist with the production of native grass and wildflower seed. Work responsibilities include-identification and harvest of specific prairie species from prairie remnants across the state. Assist with seed propagation and care of native plants in the greenhouse. Be apart of a team burning native grass/wildflower fields. Assist with the control of noxious weeds. Assist with the planting, maintenance, and harvest of over 100 prairie species. Assist with the training/direction of inmate offenders, volunteers and other staff in the cleaning harvest and planting of native plant material. Participate in the writing/production of the biannual newsletter. Operate unit equipment such as tractor, combine, chain saw, native grass drill, and seed cleaning equipment.

ABILITIES: The person in this position must possess strong organization and communication skills and be able to express ideas orally and in writing. The candidate must possess identification skills of plants to lead others in the propagation, maintenance, and harvest of prairie species. The person must be a leader capable of leading groups of volunteers, inmate offenders, and other employees. Candidates must possess the ability to operate independently with indirect supervision under general coordination and program guidelines.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in the biological sciences; including at least 12 semester hours (or the academic equivalent) in wildlife biology, and the equivalent of 6 months of full-time experience in professional wildlife work. This job will require certification in s-130/190 as a part of the prescribed fire team or gain certification within 6 months of the start of the position. This job requires application of pesticides; therefore an Iowa pesticides applicators license is needed for the position or gained with in the first 3 months of employment.
