Description
This position is to provide coordination and scientific and logistical support for a large scale grant-sponsored oyster reef restoration and research project (see http://www.wec.ufl.edu/oysterproject/). Duties will include responsibility for logistics, safety, data management and technical support and coordination of field sampling in coastal waters throughout the Big Bend region of Levy and Dixie Counties, Florida. This position requires considerable physical abilities, agility on boats and regular lifting, as well as regular exposure to elements, and hazards in the natural environment of Florida’s Gulf Coast. This position will be responsible for maintenance and repair of up to 4 vehicles and 5 boats with trailers, and a variety of field supplies and kits, instruments and equipment. This position will serve as safety officer for all aspects of the field component of this project, which will include training students and OPS workers in safety protocols, boat and trailer safety and field safety.
This position will serve as a coordinator for all field efforts involving academic, agency, NGO, fishing industry partners, graduate students, and other stakeholders. This position will also work closely with the shellfish industry, cooperators and agencies in coordinated research, and to help source restoration materials and monitor construction activities.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 3 years experience involving boat operation and experience with collection of scientific data in field situations. This position requires at minimum a valid drivers license and completion of the Florida Boater Safety course or its equivalent in other states.

Preferred qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates with MS or PhD degree in a natural resources discipline, demonstrated experience with coordination and leadership of field sampling efforts, extensive experience and certifications involving boats in shallow or complex environments, shellfish or other large-scale restoration projects, safety training, and experience with a variety of sampling equipment in marine/estuarine ecosystems. Other technical skills such as project management, supervision of field staff, working with diverse cooperators, database management, statistical analyses, GIS experience, airboat operation experience, publication experience, and medical and safety training will be considered positively.
