The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire local students for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
Program Dates: June 5 – August 11, 2017
Solo-lead a group of 4-6 locally recruited high school students to complete conservation projects and environmental education at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Davis, WV. Leader will work with students on conservation projects, during business hours Monday – Friday, with nights and weekends off.
YCC crews may:
-Construct and maintain trail
-Soil and water restoration work
-Wildlife management activities
-Recreation site maintenance work
-Painting and facility improvement projects
-Invasive species control
-YCC Crew Leaders must have strong experience teaching or working with youth, be able to maintain a positive work environment and motivate students, and be willing to work outdoors. -Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
-Must have ability to legally work in the US
-Must possess current First Aid certification & CPR by the start date of the orientation training
-Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18), teaching in an educational environment a plus
-Experience with conservation work skills or related skills (i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw). May also include experience with carpentry, landscaping, gardening, etc.
-Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more and hike 5 or more miles
-Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
-Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
-Must have personal housing arrangements near project site
