Become a member of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge’s visitor center team in Homer, AK!

Major duties for the position include presenting educational and interpretive programs, staffing the visitor center and providing information about the area, and contributing to the Refuge’s social media page. In addition to these primary duties, the intern will also have the opportunity to update displays and bulletin boards, assist in bookstore operations, and perform roving interpretation on our nature trail.

These experiences will provide the intern with the opportunity to reach a diverse group of people and to develop knowledge and appreciation of the environment and the National Wildlife Refuge System. During the season, the intern will have an opportunity to work with a variety of partners including government agencies, conservation organizations, and the refuge’s volunteer group.

Location Description:
Located on the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, Homer is a town of 5,000 residents and surrounded by ocean and wilderness. The temperatures in the summer are mild, averaging mid to high 60s, and winters are great for cross-country skiing. Homer offers a number of amenities including two grocery stores, a movie theater, and a number of restaurants and coffee shops. We are an interpretive center managed by USFWS, working to provide information and visitor services to individuals traveling to the end of the road, informing them about Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, and providing orientation to those recreating in the greater Kachemak Bay vicinity.

Education & Recreational Opportunities:
Abundant opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, kayaking, tidepooling, photography and more. Just across the Bay is the state’s only designated wilderness park where you can enjoy views of glaciers and marine wildlife, and over 90 miles of trails.
