The US Forest Service, Methow Valley Ranger District in Winthrop, WA will be filling up to two Volunteer Wilderness Ranger positions for the summer of 2017. One position will be dedicated to assisting with stock packing, and horseback patrols in the Wilderness. The region includes the North Cascades Scenic Area, the Pacific Crest Trail and the Pasayten and Lake Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness areas. Season of work: June to September (Flexible) Approximately 40 hrs per week.
Stock packing position requires strong horseback riding skills.
Must be able to work independently backpacking in remote locations, with attention to safety.
The work requires walking and climbing in steep, uneven terrain, exposure to adverse weather and insects, performing physical labor, bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds or more.
Volunteer Wilderness Ranger Duties:
Conduct wilderness patrols providing visitor information and education addressing Leave No Trace camping, wilderness philosophy and minimal stock impacts.
Data collection and monitoring including visitor use, campsite inventory and GPS.
Assist in trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, and conduct trail surveys.
Perform ecological restoration, re-vegetation, and site naturalization.
Assist with stock packing projects.
Bunkhouse housing will be provided for volunteers.
Food per-diem ($25/day) and paid vehicle mileage may be available.
