WILDLIFE CARE INTERN DESCRIPTION
The Toucan Rescue Ranch is looking for interns to work with Ranch staff to complete the daily feeding and care of the over 170 animals living at the Ranch. Interns start the day helping with the morning feeding. This includes chopping fruit and vegetables, feeding the adult sloths, accompanying a staff member feeding and providing fresh water for the over 150 animals living at the Ranch. Depending on the number of volunteers, this can take a few hours. When the morning feeding is completed, the food for the rest of the day is prepped and then the interns move on to other activities.
WILDLIFE CARE INTERN ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
You will be working alongside volunteers and TRR’s small staff. You will be asked to various activities and have several responsibilities.
¥ Cleaning animal carriers
¥ Cleaning the clinic
¥ Working with our biologist on enclosure enhancements
¥ Helping with general maintenance with our staff and volunteers
¥ Data entry for business administrators
You may be asked to help with other activities such as:
¥ Cleaning bird and mammal enclosures
¥ Helping with the care of the animals in the clinic

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
All applicants require an animal related discipline or have some experience working with animals. Experience traveling to a tropical country, living in remote conditions are preferred.
Must complete required vaccinations and a tetanus vaccination. Must purchase current international health insurance while in Costa Rica.
¥ Must be 18 years of age or older
¥ Provide proof of health insurance and current tetanus vaccination
¥ Basic Spanish proficiency
¥ Moderate degree of fitness
¥ The ability to follow directions with attention to detail
¥ A positive “can-do” attitude and the ability to work well in a team environment
¥ Experience working with wildlife or animals is a plus
Ensuring Best Practice Implementation:
Fostering practices that support and improve the Ranch’s philosophy, goals, and standards of care.
Maintaining quality medical care by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
Maintaining the TRR patient care database by entering new data and verifying findings and reports.
Maintaining and sharing professional and technical knowledge by reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking state-of-the-art practices and participating in professional societies.
The Wildlife Care Intern typically works five days a week with two days off. Days off normally will not be on weekends as these are often the busiest days at the Ranch. Workdays begin with animal feeding at 7:00am and end at 3:00pm.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM BENEFITS
Internships are voluntary self-funded positions. You will be responsible for all travel expenses/flights and immigration expenses.
Housing: TRR will organize your housing with fellow volunteers and interns working for the center or at a local homestay. Expenses for housing and food will be $600-$800 per month.
