A temporary field technician is needed to assist with southeastern pocket gopher sampling at various southern Georgia locations. The position is 40 hours per week (5 days, exact lengths will vary each 7-day period) starting approximately May 1st and continuing for up to 12 weeks. Exact start and finish dates are negotiable. Overnight travel may be required. Duties include traveling to survey locations in South Georgia each week, assisting with counting of gopher mounds using GPS units, densiometers and rangefinders, and digging holes to trap pocket gophers. Requires walking long distances and many hours in the southern sun, heat, and bugs.
Applicants should have a strong interest, coursework, or experience working in ecology, biology, wildlife, or a related field. Experience working in South Georgia is a plus but not required. Candidates must have the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time (up to 12 hours per day) over uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Must have the ability to shovel for several hours each day. Moderate risks include, but are not limited to, snake or insect bites or stings, exposure to sun, and exposure to extreme or adverse weather conditions including heat, cold, high humidity, and rain.
