Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking GIS SpecialistCartographer to primarily assist GIS Staff maintaining boundary data, reconciling land records and preparing Realty related mapping. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a working knowledge of ArcGIS.
Start Date: October, 2017 Flexiblity, within 30 days of start date.
End Date: 52 weeks from the start date
Location: This position will be based out of the USFWS Northeast Regional Office in Hadley, Massachusetts.

Compensation: The ACE Fellow will contribute ~40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $750/week paid out biweekly for food, housing, and incidental living expenses. Finding housing is the responsibility of the intern (ACE & USFWS will help provide local knowledge of rental market, where possible).
GIS Reconciliation - Percentage of Time: 40%
Assist GIS staff comparing Realty land records and GIS data elements to ensure tract numbering is accurate.
Create maps for the the Realty office - Percentage of Time: 40%
Maps are needed to seek approval for various funding sources to acquire property. Samples include LWCF Emergency Inholding requests, Appraisal maps, Categorical Exclusion maps and Recreational Access maps.
Populate Encumbrance data Layer in ArcGIS - Percentage of Time: 20%
Review Realty tract record to identify encumbrances that exist.
Create shape files of the encumbrances using the most accurate methodology available.

Fellowship is available to US Citizens and Permanent Resident only
Fellow must be between the age of 18 and 30 (up to 35 for military veterans)
A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide documentation; a personal vehicle is not required
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills (e.g. structured decision making and issues identification skills)
A working knowledge of ArcGIS.
Good organizational skills (e.g. data management, files management).
Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check
Strong desire to enter the public service field as a GIS professional. BA/BS in Geo-information related degree.
Knowledge & understanding of Cartography
Ability to read and understand complex legal documentation associated with land transactions
Ability to plot and georeference land descriptions found in various Realty documents
Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the USFWS and other federal land management agencies
The intern must be willing to represent ACE and the FWS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
