Description
Title: Botanist/Resource Technician (Hiring for crew lead and technician positions) Status: Seasonal, exempt employee. Average 40 hours per week. Location: Salmon, Idaho Reports to: Natural Resources Program Manager, Jenny Gonyer Performance dates: Estimated May 3 - September 2, 2021. Potentially extension to Sept 30 dependent on projects. Background: Salmon Valley Stewardship, founded in 2004, works to promote a sustainable economy and healthy environment in the Salmon Valley Region of Central Idaho. SVS has a cooperative agreement with the Salmon-Challis National Forest Service to collect riparian and rangelands vegetation data to inform the management of livestock grazing allotments within the SCNF. SVS also has a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Land Management Salmon Field Office to collect sage-grouse habitat data using the Terrestrial Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) strategy, which is targeted at collecting standardized inventory and long-term vegetation. SVS is currently recruiting crews for data collection with each crew consisting of a crew lead and one-two technicians. Position Summary: The Botanist/Resource Technician’s duties at Salmon Valley Stewardship will primarily focus on plant identification and the collection of riparian and sagebrush steppe vegetation data in the Lemhi Valley, located in a remote and botanically rich region in Idaho. The Botanist’s field time will focus on collecting BLM Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM) program soils and vegetation data using AIM protocols and also conducting Multiple Indicator Monitoring of streamside channels and vegetation. Other time will be spent entering and checking data, identifying plants, or helping with other SVS natural resource program activities. Work will start with AIM training in May/June, and project completion in September. Position may be extended to September 30 depending on project deadlines. There is potential for this position to join and conduct surveys with SVS’s forestry crew if timelines permit. The Botanist’s time will be spent in the field as follows: May-June: conducting AIM / Sagegrouse HAF assessments. July-September performing MIM monitoring for USFS and BLM.
Qualifications
Qualifications: Experience/Education in systematic botany or related plant identification courses. Knowledge of vegetation of the sagebrush steppe ecosystem and riparian vegetation of Central Idaho preferred. Ability to use a dichotomous key to identify plants to species level. Previous experience with Multiple Indicator Monitoring (MIM) and Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) Protocols preferred but not required. Possess skills suitable for working and camping in remote and rugged outdoor environments with variable weather, sometimes alone. A safe driving record and high comfort level operating a 4-wheel-drive vehicle on rough roads. A high level of physical fitness (ability to hike up to 5-10 miles with a light pack). The ability to use a hand-held GPS device and data recording devices such as a tablet. Self-motivation and initiative. Organization and efficiency. Willingness to work flexible hours to accommodate field days when necessary. Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment. Ability to train crew members in various monitoring protocols and plant identification. Must have the ability to enjoy a good laugh with a bunch of plant nerds. Primary Responsibilities: Assist range crew in the collection of riparian and vegetation data in the Lemhi Valley. Identify flora from upland and riparian settings to the best ability possible. Enter, edit, and quality control check collected data. Represent SVS and communicate project details to community members and permittees. Assist the natural resources program manager in other program monitoring needs. Work Expectations: Seasonal position, 40 hours on average but will depend on climatic conditions and readiness of monitoring. Crews typically work a 4/10 schedule as weather allows.
