- Description
- GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP (M.S. or Ph.D.) position to study the wintering and migration ecology of American Kestrels in north Texas. Student will address questions related to the ecology and survival of a mostly-marked wintering population (n ~350) of birds. A key component of this study is the deployment of GPS trackers and the recovery of data to document the full-annual cycle of American Kestrels wintering in Denton County, TX. Research will involve surveying for leg-banded birds, trapping and marking kestrels, deploying backpack GPS tracking devices, and making behavioral observations. Funding has been secured for 25 GPS trackers ($30K). Student would be expected to work with advisor to secure additional funding for miscellaneous field supplies, mileage, and more trackers.
- Qualifications
- Applicants should have a strong interest in demographic and survival modeling, avian ecology, and conservation biology. The candidate should be willing to work long hours to collect the maximum amount of data during the winter field season. The student would be required to qualify for a Teaching Assistantship in the Department of Biological Sciences. The selected applicant will begin course work August 2023 and begin fieldwork in November 2023. Please send letter of interest, C.V.
