This position is a Part Time, 900-hour LEAP/AmeriCorps service position at Northwoods Stewardship Center that begins January 2, 2019 and ends June 15, 2019. During that time, an average of 40 service hours per week need to be completed. Compensation: $6,000 (pre-tax) living allowance and $2,960 (pre-tax) Education Award upon successful completion of service term.
This position is part of the Lyndon Economic opportunity AmeriCorps Program (LEAP). LEAP is a national service program that places AmeriCorps members with non-profit organizations throughout the Northeast Kingdom (NEK) of Vermont to support those organizations in expanding their services that many communities rely on. LEAP supports their members in their path to educational and career attainment through direct service, on-going trainings, and professional development opportunities offered during the service year.
NorthWoods Stewardship Center is a non-profit organization located on a 1500 acre campus in East Charleston, VT. Our mission is ‘to connect people and place through science, education and action.’
The Education and Outdoor Recreation Instructor will assist the Education staff as they promote and facilitate school programs and adult outreach events and workshops that focus on environmental education and outdoor recreation. Activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, nature-based outdoor exploration, survival skill, and team-building facilitation. Service also includes hands-on environmental STEM education program development and implementation. Opportunity to extend position through the summer of 2019 (opportunity to serve a quarter-time position following this HT term). The position may also include stewardship projects, including trail maintenance.
The qualified applicant will have a positive attitude, high energy, exhibit patience and flexibility and excellent communication and leadership skills, and demonstrate experience leading groups, particularly of young adults, in an outdoor setting. Applicants must have a commitment to working with youth and the general community in the outdoors, and possess a strong sense of stewardship of the natural environment.
LEAP Minimum Qualifications:
-Be a US citizen (or have permanent resident status; call with questions about this);
-Be at least 18 years of age upon entering the Pre-Service Orientation (there is no upper age limit), or 17 years of age with written parental permission that has been verified by phone;
-Be a high school graduate or have a GED certificate, or be willing to work towards their GED as part of their service-year successful completion requirement. A member cannot have dropped out of high school to join AmeriCorps. If a member has a documented medical reason/professional opinion why they cannot finish high school, they might be eligible; call in this case;
-Has not been convicted of murder or sexual assault and is willing to undergo a National Service Criminal History Check and Agency of Human Services Child and Adult abuse registry checks.

-Have the ability and enthusiasm to drive to, attend, and participate in required trainings and events.
