Position Summary: Payette National Forest is recruiting one Trail Crew Leader from approximately May 10, 2021 through October 15, 2021. The incumbent will serve with junior level Forest Service trail crew employees to perform trail maintenance and construction on the Weiser and Council Ranger Districts. This member will work 40 hours per week (Monday through Thurs, scheduling exceptions may occur with overnight and backpacking field trips). Housing will be available in Brownlee Guard Station, located 20 minutes west of Cambridge, ID. We are looking for someone who has experience performing trail maintenance projects and using chainsaws and hand tools. Experience with trail construction or reconstruction projects and technical aspects of trail construction is a plus. Duties and Responsibilities: This position will be part of the Payette National Forest's Recreation and Trails Program. The member will serve with the West Zone Recreation Program Manager to coordinate service projects for a small trail crew (3 crewmembers including the incumbent) 60%. Service will include laying out the maintenance schedule based on past maintenance spreadsheets, leading maintenance and construction projects in the field, and recording work completed 30%. The incumbent will also be responsible for communicating trail problems to the Recreation Program Manager and coordinating field survey work with other resource areas, as necessary 10%. The term will require spending time in rugged terrain, including during inclement weather. It will also require some overnight camping. Duty/Housing Location: Duties are performed out of the Brownlee Guard Station, near Cambridge, ID, as well as the Weiser and Council Ranger District Offices. Housing is provided in bunkhouses with a common kitchen and shared bedrooms – bedrooms may or may not be shared based on overall housing needs at the guard station. Terms of Employment: One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting May 10th, 2021 through October 15, 2021. The member must complete a minimum of 920 service hours by the end of their term. Program Benefits: $10,350.00 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis, a $3,097.50 education award upon completion of the 920 hours of service. The incumbent will receive training in CPR/First Aid & defensive driving. Housing is provided. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check. The member will not engage in any prohibited activities as stated in the Member Service Agreement. Required Qualifications: • Experience working with trail maintenance and/or construction crews • Ability to lead and organize daily work projects and overnight hitches for a 3-person trail crew • Ability to hike long distances and lift and carry up to 50 lbs. • Ability to work outdoors in remote settings • Good verbal communication skills • Experience in basic GPS navigation • Self-motivated, reliable, and able • Positive attitude and ability to solve problems. • Willingness to work independently • Experience working outdoors in remote settings • Work will require some overnight hitches involving camping at or near trailhead locations Desired Qualifications: • Preference will be given to candidates with experience and qualifications using chainsaws • Experience with technical aspects of trail construction, such as retaining walls, check steps, water bars, etc. • Experience leading crews. • Radio communication skills
