Oglebay Good Zoo, the only AZA-accredited zoo in West Virginia, is seeking motivated individuals to join our animal care team as an animal care apprentice.
The Good Zoo is an academic partner with the Bachelors and Masters degree majors in zoo science with West Liberty University.
The Animal Care apprenticeship will focus on the development of skills for individuals interested in becoming animal keepers. The Good Zoo manages over 65 species, 35 of which are rare or endangered, in human care and participates in regional conservation initiatives including Eastern hellbender, pollinator, and North America songbird conservation as well as raptor rehabilitation.
Six-month positions are available on a rolling basis throughout the calendar year.
Candidates must be responsible, flexible, self-motivated, and able to work both independently as well as in a team.
Typical Tasks: skills development in a variety of disciplines associated with zoo animal care including the daily care of zoo animals including nutrition and habitat maintenance and enhancement techniques; observational skills; record keeping; animal behavior management and training techniques; and animal welfare observation and analysis techniques.
The position is physically demanding at times, requiring outdoor work in a variety of temperatures and sometimes challenging conditions.
Bachelors degree in animal science, biology, ecology, wildlife and fisheries, zoology, or zoo science.
