- Animal Care Specialist II - River Otters The Tennessee Aquarium is searching for an Animal Care Specialist II with experience and a strong understanding of behavior to participate in the care, husbandry, training, exhibition, and programming of North American River Otters. Key Responsibilities Daily care of assigned animal areas including feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and health assessment Assist in the direction of animal and horticulture volunteers and interns Responsible for formulating training plans for the lead keeper and Training Advisory group Responsible for designing and submitting enrichment items to the lead keeper and veterinarian Coordinate with lead keeper and veterinary team for health and welfare of collection Assist in the daily care of plants in assigned areas Proactively and routinely engage Aquarium visitors with formal and informal educational presentations Consistently exhibit effective communication skills, answers questions from guests, work as a team player, and treat fellow staff with respect Develop and maintain professional ties with colleagues in other institutions, attend conferences, make presentations, and participate in AZA conservation programs; stay up to date with current literature related to area of responsibility Maintain records and submit reports as necessary Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment used in area of responsibility Participate in cross-functional activities such as tours or educational programs for guests, members, media, education staff, docents, etc. Perform work in a manner that fosters the Aquarium's mission, core values and service standards Key Qualifications Bachelor's degree in biology, zoology or related science, or the equivalent of a degree in experience Minimum of 36 months experience in a related field Strong knowledge of animal husbandry and horticulture practices and principles in a zoological institution Knowledge and skills in operant conditioning if assigned to areas where this is required Ability to work in wet, hot, cold, small, and/or odorous conditions; lift/carry 50 pounds; climb ladders Full-time, hourly To apply, submit an application, cover letter and resume through the Aquarium's internal career site at tnaqua.applicantpro.com/internaljobs/.
