The Department of Zoology and Center for Aquaculture, Fisheries, and Aquatic Sciences at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is seeking a highly motivated MS student to conduct study on fish nutrition. This project will specifically look at ways to substitute live food commonly used in larval fish rearing with formulated dry feed. The study will assess growth performance and survival of larval fish as well as nutritional composition of fish tissues, and expression for various genes involved in amino acid metabolism in larval fish. The results of this research will generate the foundation for understanding how novel dietary protein replacement in feeds affects physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolic responses of larval fish. This foundation will provide the US industry with knowledge and tools to reduce the reliance on live food by developing successful efficiently utilized feeds for larval fish that will ultimately contribute to sustainable fish production systems in the US and worldwide. Student will be expected to work independently and collaboratively. Anyone interested in this opportunity please contact Dr. Karolina Kwasek:
B.S. in Animal Science or other related fields GPA > 3.2 Previous research experience in a lab is highly desirable.
