Description
To conduct conservation actions for the Magnificent Ramshorn, a highly imperiled aquatic snail native to southeastern North Carolina. This position will be primarily responsible for assisting with conservation and recovery activities, including reintroduction and monitoring work for the Magnificent Ramshorn. Other work will include identifying potential restoration locations, conducting habitat surveys, implementing habitat enhancements, coordinating with conservation partners, making landowner contacts, conducting outreach, and completing reports. This position will also occasionally assist with captive propagation and culture of Magnificent Ramshorn located at the Marion Conservation Aquaculture Center and other activities as needed. If needed, this position will assist the Central Region Aquatic Wildlife Diversity staff with fieldwork, including surveys and monitoring for rare fishes, mussels, crayfishes, and snails in the Cape Fear, Pee Dee, Lumber, and White Oak river basins. The position requires frequent travel with frequent overnight stays. A state vehicle and travel expenses (lodging and per diem) will be provided . The job period is 11 months and ends December 30, 2023 depending on start date.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES: • Understanding of freshwater biology, ecology, taxonomy, habitat requirements of aquatic fauna; • Ability to identify aquatic species of the state; • Ability to design and conduct complex field and lab studies; • General knowledge of restoration biology, hydrology, watershed-based management, and geochemical processes affecting aquatic habitats; • Ability to obtain CPR and first aid certification; • Skills in statistical analysis and computer operation including MS Office, ArcView, and Arc GIS; • Skills in presenting and preparing technical and non-technical information in writing and orally; and • Ability to function independently and work well with others MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in fisheries management, ecology, biology, or similar degree from an appropriately accredited institution and experience in wildlife or fisheries management. Must have or be able to obtain a valid NC driver's license.
