Role Summary The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking educators to work in our Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) education and watercraft inspection program. Educators will primarily work at Lakes Harriet, Nokomis and Bde Maka Ska. Assigned shifts and work locations will vary based on department needs. Lead inspectors/educators will assist in leading day-to-day operational activities and field questions from other inspection/education staff. The position is temporary with an expected duration from approximately April 2018 through December 1, 2018. Must be available for day, evening and weekend hours, however, Lead Inspectors are primarily scheduled for evening and weekend hours. Opening shifts start before dawn (as early as 5:45AM) to early afternoon and closing shifts start in the afternoon to after dusk (as late as 10:30PM), seven days per week. Lead Inspector hours/days vary throughout the season with employees typically working between 15-30 hours per week. Lead Inspectors may have the option to pick-up additional hours as an Aquatic Invasive Species Educator and Watercraft Inspector with pay rate starting at $12.51/hour, however, hours may not exceed 30 hours total per week in both jobs. Workload based on seasonal needs and hours of operation including days, nights, holidays and weekends. Regular attendance at work is expected. May work for prolonged periods of time outdoors and in all weather conditions. May be assigned to work individually or in pairs/teams. In October, limited boat launch hours begin through December 1st. During this time, number of available hours is reduced and assigned based on need and skill level. Work assignments will be a combination of office and field work. Duties Performs under the general supervision of the AIS Program Associate and is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties: Essential Duties: Provide leadership and problem solving to inspection/education staff. Communicate with staff to fill last minute shift openings. Inspect watercraft and educate boaters as they enter and exit the lakes in the Minneapolis Parks. Serve as a customer service agent for the Minneapolis Parks; provide information and respond to inquiries. Provide interactive AIS education for all ages at boat landings in Minneapolis Parks. Use mobile device to conduct inspections, track interactions with boaters and the collect customer service information from the general public. Mobile device also used for shift scheduling and communication with supervisory staff. Conduct AIS early detection boat launch surveys using in-water detection tools and equipment. Complete other duties as assigned. Related Work: Provide AIS education and program outreach at special events, and assist with new and established programs. Tactfully enforce MPRB rules and regulations. Open and close work station kiosks at beginning and end of shift, sometimes at dawn or dusk depending on time of year. Follow protocol for notifying supervisor of concerns. Perform related work as assigned.
Requirements Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Must be at least 18 years old Ability to communicate clearly and professionally both verbally and in writing. Ability to use mobile device in the field including ability to navigate DNR web application and use of text and email communication. Must have ability to travel between work locations. College coursework in one of the following disciplines: biological sciences, environmental sciences, natural resources, or wildlife conservation preferred. Experience in environmental education preferred. Previous customer service experience and/or working with public preferred. Licensing Requirements Valid Driver's License Knowledge of: (position requirements at entry) Working knowledge of Minnesota's current and potential AIS threats. Basic ecology and interest in environmental education and outreach. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and mobile technology including apps. Basic professional conduct in the workplace and in serving park patrons, including respectful communication and civility toward others. Skills and Ability to: (position requirements at entry) Identify Minnesota's aquatic invasive species. Use and properly operate tools necessary for the performance of duties including electronic devices. Ability to arrive on time for scheduled shifts and travel between work locations in a reasonable amount of time. Independent, self-motivated worker Excellent communication skills with an ability to interact positively with a wide range of customers. Ability to work a flexible schedule (day or evening) at various MPRB boat launches. Ability to communicate the rationale for invasive species programs, policies, and actions. Read and/or listen to instructions and understand content of such instructions in order to follow through on next steps. Establish and maintain effective, respectful, and productive working relationships. Understand and follow supervisor directions, work rules, policies, and procedures. Provide outstanding customer service and project positive image of MPRB to residents and customers. Work safely following safety standards Additional Information CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIREMENT: A criminal background check is necessary for positions with this job title.
