Examples of Duties
The successful individual will work within the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program. This position is primarily tasked with performing surveys aimed at detecting aquatic invasive species in water bodies in southeastern and central Utah.
Primary duties include:
1) Safely towing, launching and operating a boat. 2) Collection and preservation of plankton samples. 3) Performing visual surveys to detect and correctly identify AIS and other aquatic macroinvertebrates and vegetation. 4) Data collection and entry. 5) Maintenance of equipment and sampling gear. 6) Assist other aquatics staff with regional and statewide projects (rotenone treatments, gill net surveys, AIS interdiction etc.). 7) Occasionally supervise other seasonal personnel in accomplishing sampling duties.
Job Requirements and Skills
Applicant must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver license at time of employment. Applicant should have the ability to work independently and follow written and verbal instructions.
Preference may be given to applicants with an interest in aquatics/AIS and/or experience with four wheel drive vehicles, towing and operating a boat, identifying aquatic plants and invertebrates, and supervisory experience.
This position requires the ability and willingness to drive long distances (200+ miles/ day), work long hours (8-12) outdoors in inclement weather while maintaining a safe and positive work environment. Occasional overnight and weekend work may also be required.
