Description
Artificial Reef and Observer DIVISION: Fisheries Management Specialist POSITION NO.: 00124 HIRING RANGE: $45,000 - $52,000 WORK DESCRIPTION: This position assists in the implementation of the Virginia Artificial Reef Program and is responsible for the production, mapping, deployment, and management of fishery enhancement structures. The specialist is the primary operator of the program vessel and maintains field operation records, such as deployment data, expenditures, and maintenance. This position performs fisheries observations aboard commercial licensed gill net vessels as needed, to collect data of commercial seafood harvest and incidental captures of protected species. The specialist performs work in both the office and at field locations. They may also assist in conducting meetings with citizens, advisory groups, and provide agency outreach. DESIRED QUALIFICATION: The ideal candidate has knowledge of fishing practices, biology, and marine resources in the state of Virginia. They have knowledge of the locations and characteristics of the fishing community, ability to work well with a diverse public and members of the seafood industry, and knowledge of laws and regulations that govern the industry. Ability to follow established observer protocols. A minimum of one year of experience independently operating, navigating, and trailering vessels ranging from 25 – 50 feet. Must have flexibility in work scheduling. Ideal candidate must be eligible for a valid Virginia driver’s license, have a high school education or the equivalent, with further studies and experience in the area of marine biology or marine construction. A Coast Guard Captain’s license preferred and GIS skills a plus.
