The Assistant District Manager (ADM) position is integral to the AmeriCorps Field Program’s goal of accomplishing challenging work projects, as well as providing training, education, coordination and leadership to ensure a positive and safe experience for all AmeriCorps participants. The ADM assists the District Manager in day-to-day program operations, project management, and AmeriCorps member personnel management (hiring, performance management, and termination). This position will include frequent to semi-frequent travel to locations within the District. REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS: -- Supervisory and leadership experience (preferably with college age cohort) and ability to effectively interact with young adults from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds. -- Knowledge of human relations to assist with staff and AmeriCorps member personnel management; ability to lead, delegate, supervise, mentor, and positively influence others. -- Working knowledge of natural resource project management such as trail maintenance and construction, shoreline/watershed restoration, forest/prairie management, and wildlife habitat improvement. -- Experience with hand and power tools, tree felling and chainsaw operations, and construction. -- Demonstrated experience in coordinating and facilitating programming and training. -- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for internal management and external outreach. -- Initiative and ability to work well with minimal supervision, multi-task, and be flexible in responsibilities. -- Valid driver’s license and good driving record. -- A current First Aid/CPR certificate or better and Red Cross Trainer certification (or ability to secure and maintain it) -- Emergency management experience which could include red card certification, wildland firefighting, and disaster response experience. -- Familiarity with AmeriCorps and local, state and federal natural resource agencies. -- Four-year degree in a related field is preferred. RESPONSIBILITIES: Training -- Help develop a training plan for regional staff and AmeriCorps members and communicate timeline and curriculum in partnership with the District Manager. -- Develop, provide, and coordinate required trainings such as defensive driving, vehicle operation and maintenance, ATV, trailering, tool and equipment use and safety, herbicide application, prescribed burning/wildland fire, tree ID, CPR and First -- Aid and on-the-job trainings for crews starting new jobs or using specialized tools, in partnership with District staff. -- Assist in coordinating program-wide AmeriCorps member orientations and regional training events and education days. Safety -- Conduct annual site safety visits per assigned crew. -- Perform project specific “mini” safety reviews while in the field working with crews. -- Distribute monthly safety message to all crews within the district. -- Assist in developing new and/or improved safety trainings, presentations, manuals, etc. -- Assist District Manager in clearing AmeriCorps members for service after reviewing medical history forms at term start Equipment -- Keep work areas, offices, shops and vehicles neat and orderly - conduct repairs, clean, oil, and grease equipment as needed. -- Collect and record annual equipment inventory for each assigned crew. -- Assure proper safety and maintenance of fleet and equipment. -- Shuttle vehicles and equipment as needed. Crew Operations -- Spend time directly with crews in the field (trainings, site safety visits and working with crews). -- Assist with regional AmeriCorps member recruitment and conduct interviews, hiring/exit paperwork and orientations/end term events. -- Mediate AmeriCorps member conflict and implement discipline in accordance with AmeriCorps and Corps policy, as directed by the District Manager. -- Manage AmeriCorps member performance evaluation process at 60 days/mid-term and at service end. -- Facilitate regular communications between Field Specialists/Coordinators and leaders/members. -- Perform spike camp and emergency response duties as assigned. Service Projects -- Assist in project management for field crews, ensuring that projects are accomplished in an efficient, safe, and consistent manner. -- Review/coordinate/schedule assigned projects with project hosts and Field Specialists/Coordinators and Crew Leaders. Inform crew leaders of schedules, daily plans, tasks, and responsibilities. -- Relay work progress and completion to project host and District Manager, ensuring that assigned projects stay within guidelines and hours of contract. -- Ensure proper equipment and training are in place before projects begin. -- Prepare invoices for completed projects and submit to District Manager, when appropriate. -- Coordinate meals and lodging for spike trips. -- Distribute project evaluations for all assigned projects when complete. -- Participate in Minnesota Interagency Fire Center Duty Officer Rotation, coordinating on-call crews with DNR Forestry needs and providing administrative support. -- Assist in developing new projects and partners. Administration -- Collect/complete, review and submit timesheets and work accomplishment reports to Central office. -- Collect, review, track and code credit card receipts and expense reports for regional crews and submit to Central office each month. -- Review, sign, and submit all vehicle/employee accident reports to appropriate departments in cooperation with the District Manager. -- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and conference calls. Public Relations -- Represent the Conservation Corps at outreach events. -- Assist in developing new Conservation Corps printed and electronic materials by taking pictures, creating PowerPoint presentations, submitting stories and project updates, etc. -- Assist the development office in outreach and fundraising efforts as applicable. -- Assist in recruitment and marketing efforts.
