Longwood Gardens is seeking a seasonal Assistant Land Stewardship Technician. Our Land Stewardship and Ecology program advances land stewardship practice and ecological science in a botanical garden setting with unique opportunities for public engagement. Working as a seasonal employee in Land Stewardship is an excellent way to gain experience and improve skills in hands-on land management and ecological restoration as you work with professional technicians and volunteers in a variety of habitats across 700+ acres of forests, meadows, wetlands, streams, ponds, and agricultural lands in a southeastern Pennsylvania Piedmont landscape. Responsibilities include: •Planting native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous vegetation. •Weeding, watering, mulching, and pruning. •Managing invasive species. •Collecting ecological data. •Maintaining trails and plantings. •Interacting with guests. •Performing other general land stewardship tasks. •Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work is required. Length of employment is six months with flexible start and end dates from May through November.
Qualifications
We are looking for a self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented individual with the ability to work effectively with a broad range of people. Requirements for this position include: •Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions. •Ability to operate vehicles and equipment. •Must have a valid driver’s license. Selected candidates will complete an MVR check •Prior land stewardship or horticultural experience is preferred but not required. •Experience with string trimmers and utility vehicles is preferred but not required.
