The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife (FW) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-system Assistant Professor position specializing in temperate zone fish health and disease. This is a 9 month appointment that will begin as early as August 16, 2018. The position is part of the MSU-agency Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management (PERM) cooperative program. The PERM fisheries program unites MSU fisheries scientists with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources-Fisheries Division (Division) staff to help solve Michigan’s fisheries management challenges through their research and professional insights, and are expected to provide fish health consultation, outreach and training to improve the skill sets of Division personnel. This collaboration provides unique opportunities to the successful candidate as they will be considered part of the Division and will have complete access to the Division’s facilities, staff, and data as a Division member. They will be expected to be fully integrated into and become a part of the Division’s decision making processes on fish health matters. The position offers opportunities for individuals interested in high impact, application driven research that has direct connections to the Division’s management actions.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant and diverse department with strong ties to other departments and colleges on campus, including the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as Federal and State agencies. The successful candidate will teach classes relevant to undergraduate and graduate Fisheries and Wildlife programs in fish and wildlife disease and conservation medicine, as well as a practical course in pathobiology and diagnostic investigation. Salary will be in line with starting Assistant Professor positions at MSU.
Candidates must have a PhD in a subject(s) related to aquatic animal health and have extensive experience in aquatic animal health certification and pathogen detection/identification, particularly for fish species found in the Great Lakes region. The successful candidate should have experience with incorporating fish health into fishery rehabilitation and conservation programs and a proven ability for effective outreach and communication with state agency, field, and hatchery fisheries professionals. The successful candidate should have demonstrated success in procuring external funding. Candidates should be committed to teaching scholarship at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses relevant to aquatic animal health and pathology. The candidate is expected to advise and mentor graduate students with an emphasis on fish health and disease. The applicant will have access to fully developed fish health and disease laboratory space, and technical support.
