- The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) seeks a nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental Social Science starting August 2023. The successful candidate will create and maintain a robust research agenda focused on environmental social science, environmental law or policy, or the human dimensions of natural resource management with an applied focus on the complex relationships between people and the environment in North Carolina and beyond. The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester, including EVS 364 Natural Resource Policy and EVS 360 Human Dimensions of Natural Resource Management. The candidate may be asked to teach EVS 195 Introduction to Environmental Science (undergraduate), EVS 205 Global Environmental Issues (undergraduate), and/or EVS 501 Introduction to Environmental Problems and Policy (graduate). The candidate may have the opportunity to develop one or more courses in the candidate’s area of specialty at the undergraduate or graduate level. Candidates with both practical and academic expertise are encouraged to apply. Service to the department, college, university, and the profession is also required. - Qualifications
- Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Candidates must have a doctoral degree, or equivalent, by the start of the Fall 2023 semester in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Social Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Geography, Environmental Policy, or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate the capacity to generate externally funded research, publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and maintain a strong commitment to teaching and working in an interdisciplinary academic context. Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience • Teaching experience at the university level in targeted disciplinary areas. • Experience teaching online. • Experience engaging students in research activities. • Evidence of outstanding teaching, such as teaching awards. • Prior experience disseminating research results through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, presentations at professional meetings, etc. • Evidence of participation in teacher training, skills certifications, and other professional development. Prior to the official appointment to the university, the candidate(s) selected for hire must be able to demonstrate eligibility to teach assigned courses by successfully meeting the credentialing requirements based on official transcripts and other documentation as required.
