2 Crew leaders and 8 technicians needed from approximately March 15, 2019 to the August 15, 2019 for a study of secretive marsh birds on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. This project will involve three crews conducting point count surveys for secretive marsh birds along the entire Mississippi Coast and one crew banding, nest searching, and nest monitoring for Seaside Sparrows and Clapper Rails. Duties will include: Conducting marsh bird transect surveys or banding and nest monitoring, sampling vegetation, data entry and management, as well as maintaining field equipment. Crew leaders will be in charge of communicating with and coordinating of seasonal effort with the project manager. Crew leaders will also be expected to ensure data entry and backup occurs for their crew in addition to boat and equipment upkeep. Some activities will be strenuous with conditions in salt marshes being hot, humid, and involving biting insects. All positions will require walking in the marsh through potentially thick mud and dense vegetation. Housing will be provided.
B.S. in wildlife, biology, zoology, ecology, or closely related field are preferred. Crew Leaders: Previous experience with point counts and/or banding of secretive marsh birds, nest searching and monitoring, boat operation and maintenance, and towing trailers are required. Technicians: Previous experience with point counts and/or banding, nest searching and monitoring, boat operation and maintenance, and towing trailers are desired but not all required.
