Description
This work involves a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored grant and collaborates with several universities (including MSU), the Illinois Natural History Survey, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Job entails daily animal husbandry of wild and game farm mallard ducks. Candidate will feed birds, clean aviary enclosures daily, provide general maintenance, and conduct other activities as assigned. Other Pinola technicians and veterinary assistants will assist you with husbandry when required. The Pinola Conservancy is a world class aviary (http://www.pinola.net/) containing about 300 species of birds so the candidate will have fantastic learning experiences. Work will occur near Shreveport, LA, but applicant will be employed by Mississippi State University (MSU). Job duration is approximately November 1, 2021 - February 15, 2022. Dates are flexible. Qualifications
This is a temporary, hourly position (approx. 40 hrs/week) that will include regular early mornings and weekends. The position will require working with live animals, sometimes carrying equipment, observing birds, data entry, and tolerating exposure to variable fall-winter weather. Applicants should have genuine interest and be self-motivated in field research experiences and captive animal husbandry (e.g., zoo type of environment). Previous experience with animal husbandry is preferred but the ability to follow research protocols and collect detailed data is an absolute. Potential certification with Pinola Veterinary staff possible depending on applicant qualifications.A valid driver’s license and personal vehicle are required.
