Colorado Parks and Wildlife is measuring mountain lion density in the Gunnison Basin using mark-resight techniques and is seeking 1-2 technicians to deploy and monitor remote cameras from January 2 – March 24. Duties involve: 1) accessing camera sites via snowmobile or tracked ATV, 2) maintaining battery powered equipment and digital data, 3) Staying alive while working alone in extreme terrain and winter conditions, 4) identifying mountain lion tracks. Opportunities to volunteer on mountain lion capture events (hound chases and cage traps) may be available, but not guaranteed, nor are a focus of this job. No housing provided.
Primary qualification: excellent snowmobile skills in back-country terrain (ideally on 2-stroke mountain sled) and an interest in wildlife. Be able to work a flexible schedule (some weekend work) that is dependent on teammate/snow machine availability and the weather. Other desired experience, but not necessarily required: navigation with a GPS unit or other map-based device, satellite messaging device (e.g., InReach) experience with remote cameras, pulling trailers, cross-country or back-country skiing, ability to hike several miles per day through the snow.
