- Description
- Wyoming Game and Fish Department is hiring a technician for statewide bat work. Duties will include mist netting, non-technical caving, and acoustic work. The work schedule will vary (including long hours, weekends, and nights, as needed). Applicants should expect to hike long distances off-trail and alone in challenging conditions with occasionally steep and rugged terrain and heavy packs. Position will last from approximately May 16, 2023 through September 2023. Work with bat biologist to complete non-technical subterranean surveys in caves and mines. Capture bats using mist nets and harp traps. Assist in wing swabbing. Deploy acoustic equipment Train regional personnel in bat detector use. Hike long distances off-trail in challenging conditions in steep and rugged terrain with potentially hazardous wildlife, including rattlesnakes and bears, while carrying heavy equipment. Collect data with close attention to detail following established protocols. Data entry and proofing. Acoustic data processing.

- PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: Preference will be given to those with a high school degree, plus 2 years of experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or habitat development or 2 years of college course work towards a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management, or another closely related field. ** Agency requires that the successful applicant must have a valid driver’s license. KNOWLEDGE: Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work long hours and different times and days (including weekends and nights, as needed) on short notice. Experience handling bats strongly preferred. Experience implementing the National White-nose Syndrome Decontamination Protocol (capture or caving) strongly preferred. Experience / interest in working in the field, conducting surveys, and collecting field data. Experience or interest in acoustic data collection. Must have a valid driver's license, and ability to operate a 4WD vehicle, on- or off-road. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: None - See "Preferences" NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able and willing to hike extensive distances and collect accurate data while working in challenging conditions. The work schedule will vary (including extended hours, weekends, and nights, as needed). This position will require overnight travel. Accommodation may include tent camping, bunkhouse, or hotels. Rabies vaccination or a current protective titer will be required. Reimbursement is available after employment. SARS-CV2 Vaccination strongly preferred. NOTES: FLSA: Non-exempt Successful applicants for employment must pass a background check prior to appointment. It is highly recommended but not required that candidates receive the COVID-19 vaccine in an effort to prevent transmission of the disease to and from the bats being monitored.
