Monitor and manage breeding piping plover, American oystercatcher, least tern, and black skimmers, with a strong emphasis on piping plover, at the Holgate and Little Beach Island Units of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Technicians will track breeding territories, nests/colonies, and chicks through all phases of the nesting season. Band resighting will be a critical component of monitoring. Management will primarily include deployment of predator exclosures (cages), as well as some predator species tracking. Data entry and management will be done on an ongoing basis, but especially near the end of season. Work will be five days a week, weekend day may be required, as schedule demands. Some extreme weather and work conditions (i.e. hot/humid, buggy, long walks up to 6 miles in soft, heavy lifting) should be expected. Transport by small boat will be required to at least one of the sites. Job starts ~ April 1 and ends on a rolling basis August 1-31, dependent on outcome of nesting and other project needs. Group housing can be provided (please specify if needed).
A degree in wildlife biology, ecology or related field/experience. Previous experience working with nesting shorebirds will be given preference. Federal motorboat operator certification (MOCC) a plus. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, strong communication skills, and positive attitude. Driver's license required. Must be comfortable on a small boat while being transported to breeding sites through coastal marsh, back bay, and inlet.
