Description
Summer Employment Opportunity! Come work among the Giant Sequoias! Sequoia-Kings Canyon Field Station (USGS) is currently recruiting for summer 2023 Biological Science Technician positions in Forest Ecology and Fire and Fuels research. Pay: GG-5 ($18.06/hour) Announcement number: 39-23-05 Location: Three Rivers, California Duration: Positions are temporary, full-time: start May 8th and will last 4-6 months. Fire/Fuels and Sequoia project duties: Collect field data on fuels in remote areas of the Sierras and remote Sequoia groves in Sequoia NP. Collect detailed surface and canopy fuel data in recently burned and unburned forests, as well as regeneration data. *Backpacking and extensive hiking required.* Gain knowledge and experience in ecological research, fuels measurements, and tree mapping. Up to 5 crew positions will be filled. Federal housing might be available for rent. Personal vehicle is recommended for off-work time. Physical Demands: Work is physically demanding and includes walking, bending, climbing, and lifting of equipment up to 44 pounds when in the field, sometimes during adverse conditions. Position requires significant physical exertion on a daily basis and a high degree of safety awareness at remote field sites. Field work consists of long backpack trips away from duty station and will include primitive camping conditions. Work Environment: Field work involves moderate or sometimes extreme exposure to the discomforts of rain, cold/hot weather, and rapidly running or icy streams and rivers. Steep rocky uneven terrain will be encountered daily. If selected, you will be required to complete a pre-employment physical, at Federal expense.
Qualifications
Qualifications: Must be a US Citizen in order to qualify. To qualify for a GG‐5 you need 9 months of field experience OR 3 years of sub‐professional work experience OR 3 years of college with courses related to the work of the position to be filled (equivalent to 90 semester/135 quarter hours) plus 3 months of lab or field work experience. Subprofessional experience consists of working as a technician or aid in the field or in a laboratory or similar environment. Prefer people with an interest in fire, forest, and/or field ecology; a demonstrated interest and physical ability in working outdoors in challenging field conditions, as well as backpacking experience. Successful applicants should have strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working on small field teams. Primitive camping and backcountry backpacking experience is highly desired.
