The Montana State Library is seeking applications for a Biological Data Scientist. The position leads efforts to centralize large spatial and tabular datasets and works with the Program Coordinator, Information Systems and Sciences lead, and other staff to design, develop, and manage geospatial databases for animal, plant, and biological community information and create value added data products such as predicted habitat suitability models. This position works closely with biologists and data managers from state, federal, tribal, and nongovernmental partners to assemble and integrate information from a variety of data sources and disseminate information using standardized environmental summary reports and customized geodatabases. Primary Duties: Georeference/digitize hard copy tabular information on animal and plant observations, structured survey locations, range polygons, study site polygons, and habitat features using point, line, and polygon vector features into SQL server databases using ESRI ArcMap software. Centralize and ensure spatial and tabular data integrity for large datasets and the overall database by developing and modifying workflows in Python and T-SQL. Create value added data products such as predicted habitat suitability models through R, SQL, and Python coding and customized modeling software and focal geospatial information products. Manage and improve data acquisition workflows with feedback from science staff through customized data gathering applications. Answer requests from data users including creating standardized environmental summary reports and customized geodatabases. * Advanced degree in Botany, Zoology, Ecology, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Previous experience with species identification and field survey techniques. * Previous experience with ESRI's ArcGIS suite, including ArcPro, ArcMap, ArcGIS Online, Collector for ArcGIS, and Survey123 for ArcGIS. * Demonstrated proficiency with scripting and query languages and statistical methods, such as Python and T-SQL.
