Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a Biological Field Technician that can work flexible hours in SE Nebraska, to conduct surveys at operational windfarms, with the potential to assist with other wildlife surveys in the area. Key Details: Compensation:$16.50-$18.50/hour DOE Start Date: February 2023 End Date: January 2024 with possibility of extension Location: Southeast Nebraska Job Summary: This position entails conducting post construction surveys at operational windfarms for bird and bat fatalities. There is potential for the right candidate to assist with other wildlife studies including avian use, nest monitoring and sensitive species surveys. Successful candidates must be able to: Live and work in a remote field setting, work well both independently and with others, and follow field and data collection protocols. Work an average of 30-40 hours weekly, though there may be weeks requiring shorter or longer hours, depending on the project and seasonal workloads. Travel between sites in a work or personal vehicle. Mileage reimbursement will be provided in case of personal vehicle use. Stay organized, collect and manage data, including implementing quality control measures. Work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners. Appear for work on time; start times can often start as early as sunrise. Responsibilities include: Standardized fatality searches. Standardized protocols to measure sources of bias in fatality surveys. Potential opportunities to conduct additional biological surveys. This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of all the duties which may be associated with this position.
Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred; but experienced, enthusiastic individuals are encouraged to apply. Previous field experience at wind projects is desirable. The ability to identify birds of the region by sight and sound is highly preferred, but not required. Familiarity with computers, GPS units, topographic maps, compass, and other field equipment is necessary. Experience in electronic data collection is preferred, but training will be provided as needed. Physical Requirements: Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys will require walking or standing for entire shifts in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Technicians must be equipped with and provide own suitable safety toed footwear (steel or composite-toe), quality binoculars, appropriate field clothing, water bottles, etc. WEST is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for everyone and highly recommends all prospective hires be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to their start date.
