Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for a temporary full time, Biological Field Technician to help investigate the impact of wind turbines on bats and birds at an operational wind facility. Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data. Key Details: Location: Hillsdale, MI Compensation: $16.00 -18.00 per hour Project Duration: asap – October 15, 2022 # of Hires Needed: 1 Full time Workload: Full time (40+ hours per week) with some scheduling flexibility Additional Details: Mileage will be reimbursed for personal vehicle use. Proof of insurance will be required for use of personal vehicle. Job Summary: The field technician will conduct standardized searches beneath operating wind turbines to locate and document bat and bird carcasses. The successful candidate must be willing to follow field and data collection protocols, work well both independently and with others and communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors and clients. Previous experience conducting carcass searches is beneficial, experience working in extreme weather conditions and navigating rough terrain essential. Training will be provided on bat/bird identification and field data collection protocols. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates to gain hands-on field experience collecting scientific data and working with a team of nationally recognized bat and avian biologists. Responsibilities include: Search designated plots beneath wind turbines for bat and bird fatalities, and collect data to measure sources of bias in fatality estimation Conduct field work while adhering to WEST and client field safety requirements, including navigation of rural roads Potential opportunities to conduct additional biological surveys This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of the duties which may be associated with this position.
Qualifications
Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred; undergraduates or other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply Must be able to follow all WEST and client safety protocols to ensure safe navigation throughout the day. Technicians are expected to use good judgment to stay safe and work efficiently Must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, biologists, technicians, clients, and landowners. Skilled use of compass, global positioning system devices, range finders, and tablet computers as well as the ability to maintain equipment Proven organizational skills, ability to collect and manage electronic data, including implementation of quality control measures, are preferred Ability to identify common bats and birds within the region, or experience using field guides and keys for identification of unknown specimens is preferred Training will be provided for all survey efforts and job related activities Technician must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots, etc.) and field clothing Must be able to appear for work on time; start times can often be as early as sunrise Physical Requirements: Applicants must be in good physical shape, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of the environment (sharp vegetation, mud, dust, extreme heat and cold). Successful candidates must be willing and able to spend a majority of the day (8-12 hours) in the elements, collecting and managing data with great attention to detail and must possess the scientific background to be able to adhere to scientific methods and report results of field studies WEST is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for everyone and highly recommends all prospective hires be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to their start date.
