Biological Field Technicians – Ponca City and Lawton, OK
Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size consulting firm with offices across the United States, is looking for two to three part time, experienced wildlife technicians near Stillwater, Oklahoma. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.
WEST is seeking two wildlife technicians for fieldwork that will require long days in a range of temperatures. Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of conducting ground-based biological surveys in the local environment (e.g., sharp vegetation, dust, extreme heat and cold). Work is part time (approximately 4 to 6 hours once per month) and requires availability throughout daylight hours, with 12-24 hour notice.
Primary responsibilities of this position include conducting post-construction fatality monitoring at operating wind energy facilities and conducting standardized fixed-point avian use surveys across South Central/ Northern Oklahoma. Data collection will include use of detailed paper datasheets. Data management as well as some data entry and summary may be required. There may be limited opportunities to conduct additional biological surveys.
Strong birding skills and familiarity with Oklahoma birds are a must. Field work will entail long hours of walking, standing, bending, etc. in sometimes inclement conditions. Selected wildlife technicians will work independently and must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors including adhering to schedules and providing routine summaries of survey efforts. Job duties may require use of compass, global positioning system devices, Kestrel weather instruments, rangefinder, and digital cameras as well as the ability to maintain equipment. Training will be provided for all survey efforts and job related activities. Wildlife technicians will be required to follow all safety protocols for WEST. Wildlife technicians will be expected to use good judgment to stay safe and work efficiently.
Vehicle will be provided for work completion or mileage reimbursed. GPS units, compass, camera, and spotting scope (if necessary) will be provided by WEST, however, wildlife technicians must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear and appropriate clothing for conducting ground-based avian surveys.

Compensation: $12-16/hr DOE
Workload: part-time hours available (4hrs/ month up to 30hrs/month), with some schedule flexibility
A completed degree in wildlife biology or related natural resources discipline preferred, but not required; skills in identification.
• Must be proficient in identification of 1) all species of waterfowl and waterbirds in breeding and alternate plumage, and 2) other bird species that are known to occur within Oklahoma, including eagles by sight.
• Precise and thorough electronic and paper data collection is required.
• Able to work independently but cooperatively with project manager, field supervisor, and other technicians.
• Employee must be able to appear for work on time with 12-24 hour notice (all daylight hours).
• Maintain focus for long periods of time.
• Follow instructions from manager and team leader.
• Maintain positive attitude and accept guidance and constructive criticism.
Applicants must be in good physical shape as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Environmental conditions include working in rain, wind, mud, and very cold or hot temperatures. Candidates may encounter snakes, insects, and other wildlife. Proficient use of topographic maps, compass, GPS units, and other field equipment required.
